Mining

The current ELFM research programme does not yet include large-scale mining of landfill sites. Currently experience is gained with separation techniques and possibilities for dumping material valorisation are explored. This was realised in the official remediation projects and as a support for local authorities. In both cases this practical experience is very important for the knowledge acquisition within OVAM.
During the implementation, the remediation project Zuienkerke gave some new opportunities for additional research around ELFM. The research of separation techniques for the dump material was completed in 2013. The aim of the separation analysis was to describe the dump material better on the one hand and explore the opportunities for valorisation on the other. An extensive follow-up report was drawn up and is presented at international conferences.

"Mining” space

For small landfill sites without (or with limited) need for remediation, the proportion of soil and debris-like materials is important for the mining decision. Another important condition is the applicability of this material. This means the possibility of mining also leads to the recovery of space that can again be put to multifunctional use.
Such problem analyses were performed for landfill sites in Evergem and Kruibeke. It is striking that a private company also opted for the disposal of a previous landfill instead of a traditional insulation variant.
